“A Broken Bond” poignantly explores themes of betrayal, heartbreak, and resilience, focusing on the aftermath of a failed relationship and the speaker’s emotional turmoil from losing contact with his son. Despite his pain, the speaker expresses no animosity toward his ex-wife, acknowledging the need for their separation for their well-being. This poem is a revised version of the original written in 2007.

Oh, lady, you’ve walked out on me, it’s true,
No longer fanning the embers of my heart.
I’m not a vessel, hired just for you,
When fortune’s dice played a cruel part.

You left me often, yet I took you back,
But this last act shattered me, like fragile glass.
Now fate has turned, and kindness fills the track,
But your desire to return is a wish I must pass.

My home is not a transient shelter where guests can roam,
But a steadfast refuge, a settled zone.
We wed for life, a promise you betrayed,
Leaving me shattered, lost, and dismayed.

Our child, our hope, a treasure lost—you stole,
A wounded bird without the strength to soar.
But wounds have healed, and now I stand whole,
Refusing to be cast aside once more.

Remember, lady, your farewell decree:
To think no more of us, to set us free.
You urged me on to find a love so sweet,
But learned that self-love is best, fulfilling and complete.

You thought you’d triumphed, but destiny had schemes.
The man you chased abandoned shattered dreams.
Now you return, demanding I concede—
But I stand firm, unyielding, finally freed.

So tell me, lady, why do you return now?
Is it regret, or simply a newfound game?
Do you seek solace, or a temporary vow?
Or do you believe that I’ll remain the same?

We parted ways, and I’ve moved on for good.
No chains of the past will bind me now.
The harm is done; there’s no love left to salvage,
So let the echoes fade, and don’t bother to bow.
THE ORIGINAL FOLLOWS…
Hey Lady, you’ve walked out on me for good and no longer set me on fire
You can bet I’m not a streetcar for hire
When fortune was playing a game of dice with me
You chose to desert me and no longer wished to play the role of wife to me
You left me so many times but I always took you back
But this act finale of yours broke the camels back
Now that fate is favoring me and the Gods are kind
You wish to return, its not done this way lady, I’m no longer bound
No longer are you my streetcar of desire
Lady, someone else ignites my passions, sets me on fire
So let’s move on the way you wanted to, so let’s not get into a quagmire
The place where I stay is my home, not a hotel. You can’t walk in and out at will. Residency is permanent. We don’t go around giving rooms on hire
I married you, took you home, hoping that we would be together for life but you majorly screwed up our lives and left me in a situation dire
We had a Baby and you walked out with him leaving me in the lurch
You refused to allow me to see him. I felt so wretched. I was like a shaken bird looking for its perch
But things are getting better for me and I don’t want you to mess up things for me once more
This is one thing I am convinced of, a zillion percent sure
You will kindly recall your parting note when you asked me not to think about us anymore and that you would marry someone with whom you could relate
You also asked me find someone cute I could love so lets not talk about love and hate
You thought that you had it all set but the guy you were banking on gave you the slip and you want me to accept you once more
Do you think I’m dim-witted? Then you’re bloody well mistaken
Lady, I have learned the lessons of life the hard way
So lets move on the way you wanted to so lets not get into a quagmire
You’ve been doling out advice. Now let me give you a piece of my mind
I’m not going to be taken in by sweet talking grind
This relationship is long dead. Let’s not linger
